Beginner Guide on Blogging

You have decided to start writing a blog. You have all the ideas in the world. But you have no idea where to start. Well, worry not, we have broken down the ever complicated task of starting  blog into 5 different, easily understandable components.

Five easy steps to building a blog:

  1. Choose a blogging platform (self-hosted recommended)

There are many blogging platforms out there for you to choose from and one of the most widely recognized one is definitely WordPress. There are alternatives such as Blogspot, Squidoo or Wix but we would recommend wordpress due to it’s ease of use and unlimited amount of plugins.

When it comes to blogging, you can choose the free model hosting service where you will be hosted under the blogs own hosting or you can opt for a self-hosted alternative. If you are planning to go professional with this blog, we would recommend hosting it yourself, the best one wil be hosted on cheap linux hosting platform.

  1. Pick a domain name

Picking a domain name for your blog is of utmost importance. The domain name represents your brand and you want to choose something that is memorable for people out there. Do not choose an extremely complicated name because that would increase the chances of your visitors typing in an error, sending them into a 404 page which automatically translates to you losing a potential visitor.

Also, you might want to consider not using numbers and hypens in your domain name. Those would easily confuse your customers especially when it comes to cases like five or 5. Choose two syllable names, such as WordPress or Facebook to make it easier for people to remember your page. There is a reason why the most popular websites in the world are usually just two syllable.

  1. Get a web hosting account

After getting a domain name, you will need a web hosting account to host your website on. Hosting is where you keep all your files related to your website, file such as images, videos, texts and even songs. Without a hosting, people will not be able to access your content.

When choosing a web hosting account, you will need to make sure that you scrutinize on a few points, mainly the bandwith, storage space, support by the hosting provider and downtime. This is to ensure that you have a hassle free experience when it comes to hosting your web and you are more focused on what is important, writing.

  1. Install blogging software and set up a blog

Most web hosting comes with one click software install in their Cpanel. If you are not sure how to do so, do not feel reluctant to ask their support team, which will be more than happy to guide you. Once you have that software installed, you will need to create an account, log in and start arranging your online “home” to how you like it.

  1. Select a blog design and layout

Selecting a blog design is entirely up to your personal preference. If you are writing about travel, you might want more fun colours such as yellow or red. If you are going for something more technical, a white background is always advisable. After all, it’s your place, so you can alter it to your very own preference.
